Operation Reassurance is a video installation and photographic series developed through the Canadian Forces Artists Program during an artist residency at Camp Ādaži, Latvia, with the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia. Filmed alongside artillery units during training exercises and daily military life, the project examines repetition, anticipation, discipline, and the quiet moments that precede action.
Set along NATO’s eastern flank near the borders of Russia and Belarus, the work unfolds in a region shaped by a history of occupation, displacement, and the loss of national sovereignty. In the Baltic states, memories of war, Soviet rule, and the struggle for independence remain within living memory, lending urgency to questions of security, democracy, and collective defence.
Through an observational and human-centered approach, Operation Reassurance offers a contemplative portrait of military service in an era of geopolitical tension, technological change, and Canada’s commitment to NATO’s collective defence mission.
